Tying an Albright Knot
† Thursday, October 21st, 2010The Albright knot is the right solution if you are attempting to join two pieces of filament together that have different diameters. In fact, this knot is often used to join braided line unbraided filament together. The Albright knot when properly constructed is the best method of ensuring that these two unequal sized lines stay firmly attached. The Albright is simple to create and with a bit of practice you can master the technique.
There are four simple steps to successfully creating an Albright knot they are:
1. Locate the end of each piece of line, select the heaviest piece and create a loop similar to the eye of a needle. This will create the basic loop needed to run the lighter line through. Make sure you are holding the heavier line in your left hand (if you are right handed) between your forefinger and thumb.
Next you will want to carefully insert the thinner line through the “eye” that you created in the thicker line. Hold the loop of the thick line in place and neatly wrap the lighter filament line around the base of the loop. For best results you should wrap it 8-10 times. When you are done, this should slightly resemble a hangman’s noose.
3. To ensure that the Albright knot is strong, you must thread the smaller line back through the loop in exactly the direction that you originally threaded it. This step cannot be overlooked, as without it your Albright knot will not perform properly.
4. The final step is to moisten your knot with water (or saliva if you are not near water) and tug on the two ends. Make sure that the knot pulls tightly as this will add even more strength. Now you can trim the excess ends. Your Albright knot is now ready to add to your reel.
When you start wrapping your line it is important that it be as neat as possible. Stop and think about your Albright knot like this – if it’s well constructed and smooth it will go through your reel as if it were nothing more than a kink in your line – if it’s poorly constructed it is likely to get stuck in the guides or in your reel at the most opportune time during your fishing expedition. The smoother your Albright knot design, the more effective it will be. Some anglers like to put a drop of super glue on the ends of the clipped ends to reduce the chances that the line will start fraying and catch in your guides or reel.
If you are interested in experimenting with the Albright knot, you can do so by creating a crisscross design. This is done simply by winding the line five times in a downward motion then reversing and coming back up five times to create the crisscross. This method creates an even stronger Albright knot and the overall results will be more eye appealing. While eye appeal isn’t more critical than strength, it can’t hurt.
When you are getting prepared for a saltwater fishing adventure, having the proper equipment is essential. Some of the most popular products on the market include okuma reel, van staal reel, and shimano spinning reel.
